Reply with quote | #16 | Nice find, and nice write up. you did forget to mention the biggest difference is the suspension on the 88's is a big improvement over the prior years. And the fastback body style came out mid year in 86. The fast backs are a bit scarce around here unfortunately, so they are pretty expensive. I have an 85GT that I put the aux gauges and cluster in, and an 86SE sitting around doing nothing. My buddy just finished his 3800sc swap into hs 86SE. __________________ Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak.

I remember when you posted your '85 GT a while back. It's good to see you still have it around. What's the plan on the '86?
I'm pretty sure there was no "mid-year" '86 fastback. They were fastbacks the second the '86 model came out. This is the confusion that people seem to go crazy over. I've read from the Fiero Spotters Guide (supposed to be the 'official' dissertation on the Fiero) that the only differences in '86 were the manual transmissions. Early on there was a four speed trans, then later they got the five speed, but both versions are indeed fastbacks. There are also people with early '86 GT vins that have indeed proved that their cars were originally fastbacks so the ONLY non-fastback GT must be the '85.
I actually already did the huge spill on the suspension differences when I bought my '88 Formula a while back. After digging around on this '86 GT I found out it has an Eibach spring kit on it. All I can say is it's incredibly bumpy ride. I think I have more bump steer with the Eibachs than normal suspension. My '88 Formula has virtually no bump steer and rides incredibly smooth. I'm mean it's seriously smooooooooth, even for a Fiero. I've driven a few Fiero owners in my Formula and they agree that it's the smoothest riding Fiero they've ever rode in.
I've actually converted this '86 GT to be my new daily driver. Since I got it dirt cheap I'm pretty much going to drive it until it falls apart. The plan is that since I'm wanting to hold onto my Formula and it's in dire need of a paintjob, when the GT does finally 'die' it will get a complete body panel swap with the Formula, thus creating an '88 GT/Formula. I've honestly been holding back on modifying my Formula, but as I've been presented with a Fiero with the fastback body I'm willing to do the swap. What's kept me reserved from doing any significant work on the Formula is it's unique '88 engine cradle. Since the '86 GT has the same cradle geometry from all prior '88 Fieros, I can easily prep a drive train assembly outside the car and ready it for placement in the GT with a spare cradle. It's been quite a problem with locating a spare '88 cradle, as they tend to be a bit expensive. Prior year cradles are a dime a dozen.
So the plan is I can swap all the body panels in the span of a full weekend, so what that would leave me with is a '88 GT/Formula that's driveable, and a '86 GT with an aero coupe body simply in need of a drive train. __________________ 1997 Eclipse Spyder 2.4L - Hardly ever driven

Reply with quote | #18 | I originally got the 86 as a parts car for my 85, but it runs and drives, just needs some tlc so I can't bring myself to tear her down. I'm going to start picking up suspension and brake parts soon, but since my borla exhaust and CAI install I have developed a severe oil leak, so a new engine may be first. I just need to see if I can come up with a 3800sc or a cheap ls1. these things seem to turn into money pits if you don't drive them. I have only done about 4k a year on mine since I drive my bike most of the time. __________________ Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak.

Reply with quote | #19 | Well.... I really haven't been able to do anything that I'd like to with this car. I've converted it to be my daily driver and it's been a blast to drive. A lot of people look at it and I've been approached at gas stations and at the University by people inquiring about it. Got a few offers to buy it but I don't plan on selling anytime soon.
I have however, between writing papers and studying for exams, begun to make some leeway on getting the car to look "presentable". This Nov. 13th I plan on showing the Fiero GT alongside my Fiero Formula at a local cruise in show. I went a while back with my Formula and it was generally well received. I hope that having two different Fieros alongside each other may pique a few interests...
I first just needed to really clean everything up. A lot of the black colors on the car has faded or became damaged. This was the engine compartment the day I bought the car.
Here it is as it sits now.
As you can see there's still a ton of work to do but I've made progress.
I'm also working on up front a bit.
There were parts repainted at some point in the car's life. You can see in the pictures above some red overspray in parts. These pics are actually a bit old as I've done some more work, but I've managed to get most everything under the compartments back looking glossy and clean. I also had to restore the spare wheel and the lug tool, which had both gotten a bit rusty.
I'll likely add updated photos when the cars are on display at the show. __________________ 1997 Eclipse Spyder 2.4L - Hardly ever driven

Reply with quote | #21 | There are a couple of us locally that go to a lot of shows with our Fieros. Normally there are three of us, but there has been as many as 7 at local shows. __________________ Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright, until you hear them speak.
